Broccoli Hoop – 4″

Raise your hand if you still pretend you’re a dinosaur when you eat your broccoli! Grown up talk: Broccoli depletes calcium from the soil especially, and should not be planted near other species that require a lot of calcium. For best results, this Mediterranean plant should be planted with beets, which increase magnesium in the soil. Rosemary and other aromatic herbs also attract pests, which would otherwise lay their eggs in the broccoli crowns.

This piece is backed by felt and took 3.25 hours to sew.

This collection is inspired by permaculture, otherwise known as companion planting, which ensures a biodiverse garden and maximizes symbiotic relationships. I am a self-taught artist but my work is informed by a Master’s degree in Environmental Conservation Education from NYU and the drive to understand our relationship to the global environment.
