Spinach Hoop – 4″

You must eat your spinach if you want to grow big and strong… mothers have said this since the dawn of civilization, in what is now Iran, and I assume they will continue to say it forever. This leafy green grows well with broccoli, cabbage, and arugula, and provides crucial shade for legumes. Avoid planting spinach next to potatoes, however. Spinach root systems are shallow enough to crowd out the potato tubers.

This piece is backed by felt and took 4.5 hours to sew.

This collection is inspired by permaculture, otherwise known as companion planting, which ensures a biodiverse garden and maximizes symbiotic relationships. I am a self-taught artist but my work is informed by a Master’s degree in Environmental Conservation Education from NYU and the drive to understand our relationship to the global environment.
