Strawberry Hoop – 4″

Out of stock

Can you imagine strawberry fields forever, or at least as far as the eyes can see? I can’t, especially after learning that strawberries are “heavy feeders”, and make it hard to grow several other species nearby. It seems weirder still when you consider that they are native to Germany, and that country is mostly mountains and rocky soil… Fortunately companion planting helps improve your chances. Planting legumes nearby boosts nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and planting alliums can deter pests. Strawberries should NOT be planted next to brassicas, which compete for moisture and the same nutrients, and tomatoes nearby can lead to fungal disease.

This piece is backed by felt and took 5.5 hours to sew.

This collection is inspired by permaculture, otherwise known as companion planting, which ensures a biodiverse garden and maximizes symbiotic relationships. I am a self-taught artist but my work is informed by a Master’s degree in Environmental Conservation Education from NYU and the drive to understand our relationship to the global environment.
